Winter Nets Report- Session 1

More exciting than Transfer Deadline Day. More intense than the first morning of an Ashes test match. Yes it was that time of the year again, winter nets!

Reports during the Christmas season had reported seeing Dohnut measuring out his run up on the Oxton back pitch with a tape measure from a Christmas cracker, and the keenest person in 3rd team cricket expressed his enthusiasm further by turning up at Birkenhead School 4 and a half hours early.

The arrival of Duncan Ritchie brought swashbuckling batting to the nets despite the lack of helmet, as well as more information than a Wikipedia page, with brain surgery the main topic of discussion leading to bemused looks from Messer’s Stokes, McGenity and McGreary. The new skippers cry for ‘a bit of chat’ was met with resounding silence from all present.

At this point I will delve into the positives of the evening’s events:

Moving on, it was nice to hear James Fennah deciding to start a ‘Bouncer Competition’ attempting to use the extra bounce of the green mats to maim the
batsman at the other end. I love team spirit too!

Obviously the Under 15’s left after an hour however I did notice one urchin lingering around at the back, but it could have been Gaunny!

I’m sure that with more sessions the quality on offer will improve and I may regain the ability to pitch a ball up and to land it on the green mat too!

A personal highlight included Gilly ‘forgetting’ his pads! Standards.

Jason gets the Call

House chairmand and local Oxton personality Jason Holland has had the call into the 1st Team for Saturdays end of season clash with Grappenhall.

When news broke Jason’s agent John Mitchell ensured the deal was just right and Jason will wear the number 19 shirt.

Lee Dixon ” We are delighted to get such a high profile player to represent the club at this level, signinging like this will surely attract players from all over the county to get on the Oxton Band wagon for next season.

Blakey Holland will be relieved of his Bus duties to allow him to focus totally in the job in hand.

Preview:

Oxton go into this final match knowing that a win of 25 points would see them win promotion to Divison 1. Without injured spinner Watson and fellow left-arm spinner Paddy Greaves on DofE, skipper Richard Fennah has an otherwise full squad to pick from. Form wise, Oxton have beaten Chester Boughton Hall and Irby in the last two weeks, while Park plan on leaving the league at the end of the season and are without a win since May. Oxton will be confident due to excellent unbeaten home form and the knowledge that two rival sides, Cheadle Hulme and Sale play against each other at the Sale Moor Cricket Ground.

2nds make the long trip to Bollington!

Oxton 2nds did there bit to ensure all Oxtons sides finished victorious last Saturday. The trip to the outskirts of Derbyshire did not effect the team performance as Oxton bowled first. A man of the match performance from James Fennah seen him finish with figures of 16 overs, 4 maidens, 8-31. Only bollingtons opening batsman showed any resistance with 43. In the 2nd innings, Fennah contributed 18 runs after openers Subhedar (30) and bargett (40) reduced the total of 145 runs needed before Ash Dale Jones hit an unbeaten 51 not out. 25 points and with one game remaining, the side could end the season strongly to finish in the top 4. If not for a poor start to the season, things could have been alot brighter in the title race. Expectations for next season will be high with nothing less than promotion being vital.

A no show from Mobberley!

Oxton took advantage of a late cancellation from the visiting side who could not raise a team. With threatening weather forecast, it turned out to benefit Oxton as rain may have affected the result.

Watson injury update

Following a meeting with medical staff earlier today, spinner Chris Watson has been ruled out of the 3rd XI match between Oxton and Birkenhead Park. Watson was reported as being gutted upon hearing the news. His season over, the 3s need to win to secure promotion after a fantastic season so far.

3rds now just one game away

As a nervous observer to this must win game, I clocked up many laps of the pitch while the second placed 3s bagged a vital win in their penultimate fixture.

Losing the toss and put in on a tough pitch, and dodging rain showers along the way, John Fennah opened with Ollie Goddard and the wicket keeper’s contribution with the bat was brilliant as he notched a superb century to guide Oxton to a competitive 153 all out. Joe Gorman hung around as John went through partners at a fast rate with the other batsmen failing to make any notable scores. Rob Grisenthwaite managed some big hits at the end but a good performance in the field was required.

Matt‘the Barman’ Ballard opened the bowling, making the breakthrough with skipper Richard Fennah taking the catch at slip.

However, it was the introduction of Paddy Greaves and Liam ‘Dohnut’ McNamara that changed the game. The two left armers picked up vital wickets, 2 for Dohnut while Greaves’ spell of 12 overs 5-45 bowled OCC to victory with the help of Ballard.

Runs were running out until Greaves wrapped the game up with his 5th wicket and more crucial points for Oxton.

With the last game approaching, Oxton are in a good position to secure promotion with Birkenhead Park being the visitors to Townfield Lane’s back pitch.

2nd XI draw at Congleton!!!

After a battering of thunder, lightening and heavy rain on Friday evening and Saturday morning, swimming looked more likely than a game of cricket. After leader Mike Fell made contact with their captain, we were surprised to hear the sun was shining in Congleton. On arrival at the ground after a long drive, the weather still looked bleak and too top things off, we lost the toss and were put into bat. Oxton started well even with some tidy opening spells at both ends by the bowlers. Peter Benson (49) batted well and both Subhedar and Gauntlett hitting the ball well were dismissed in their late teens. Contributions from Crowley, Money A, Dale Jones and a vibrant Duncan Ritchie saw Oxton to 217 off 50 overs with some LBW decisions dubious to say the least. Less said about the slightly awkward on the field hitch during our innings the better. Resolved! Moving on – a special mention and congratulations to Duncan for a delightful innings topped off by him top edging his first ever 6 in his career, something he had not even achieved in his younger days!!! 217 should have been plenty but a winning draw with the opposing team 9 wickets down resulted in the match being drawn and proved what has been the problem all season that we have not been good and disciplined enough to bowl the better sides in the league out. Mobberley next up at home, earlier start and team up on board in club. (Reminder for captains and to any members with outstanding membership needs to be paid ASAP).

Highlights – Nice teas, Benos 49 and Duncans 6.
Lows – Long drive, lost toss, horrible weather, didn’t win!!!
